One of the most important celebrations in the Chinese calendar is Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is a time of year when Australia’s cultural heritage is celebrated. This holiday normally takes place in Feburary, this however dependent upon the 1st day of the Chinese calendar. Chinese New Year is celebrated throughout Australia in such areas as Brisbane, Melbourne, Bendigo, Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra.

Towards the beginning of Chinese New Year you will notice that you see many people walking around in red clothing, this is because red is an extremly lucky color in Chinese culture. You may also see them exchanging lucky money, which is another tradition for celebrating Chinese New Year.

Many Australian cities celebrate this event which is why another common practice around Chinese New Year is to purchase beautifully decorated Chinese lanterns, silk dragons or firecrackers.

During the 1850s and 1860s Australia experienced a huge influx of Chinese people, this took place during the Gold Rush. This is a big factor in why many Chinese-Australian families celebrate Chinese New Year in Australia.

Melbourne, sydney and Brisbane have designated Chinatowns in their areas where you can find many grocery stores, restaurants, markets and small Chinese businesses. These are the areas that most Chinese people will frequent to prepare for their holiday.

In Melbourne, a Great Dragon appears to celebrate the Chinese New Year. This Dragon is carried through the streets by around 200 people. Each year, the Great Dragon is awakened with a ceremony that begins with an offering to the Gods which is then followed by a lion dance.

As with any other great holiday food plays a major role in the celebrations. The Chinese New Year feast is among one of, if not the most important family meal of the year. For people who come to visit Australia for Chinese New Year this is a great opportunity for them to sample Chinese cuisine at it’s best.

Several Chinese New Year sayings that you might hear at the celebrations are “Gong Xi Far Tsai” or “Kung Hei Fat Choy” (Happy New Year). These sayings are also wishes for the coming year to bring you prosperity and good fortune.

A vow an individual makes to change a negative lifestyle habit or maybe even a situation, so it can become a positive one, is the definition of a New Year’s resolution. We must first make a conscious decision then your actions will follow, resulting in the success of changing someting for the better. The beginning of the year is uasually the perfect time to embark on a “fresh start” as you step out into your destiny. What’s your resolution?

With so much negativity in the world, it is easy to have our thoughts follow in the same direction. It is important to make a conscious decision to take control of our thoughts daily and choose to think positive regardless of the situation, which is usually temporary. As a result many of our unsuccessful past New Year’s resolutions might be fulfilled without a lot of extra effort.

New Year’s Eve is a holiday when the world is able to say farewell to the old year and welcome in a fresh new one. People from all over the globe countdown the clock to midnight, revel in colorful fireworks as they cross the skies and sing in unison to Auld Lang Syne during parties everywhere.

The first country to ring in a new year is Tonga and the last one to celebrate is American Samoa. New Year’s Eve is a big event in several parts of the world such as Times Square in New York City and Trafalgar Square, which is located in London, England. However, the holiday is popular in other areas as well. In Edinburgh, the holiday is an end to a five day long festival. The city of lights, Las Vegas, closes the strip to vehicles and Fremont Street hosts a colossal street part that includes concerts, confetti and gambling. Also, a light show timed to music is held in the dome above the historical Las Vegas location.

The city of Cape Town, located in South Africa, attempts to outdo Mardi Gras during their New Year’s Eve Celebration with dancers dressed in elaborate costumes, music and parades. The crowds who are counting down in Barcelona, Spain for the New Year’s Eve party dance all night long. The popular places to celebrate in Barcelona, are the Gothic Quarter and in Las Ramblas.

This year New Year’s Eve party can be enjoyed in Australia, because of the city’s famous fireworks display, which can be an affordable trip with cheap flights. Bonfires are lit in Rejkjavik, Iceland, for the worldwide party and after the fire is enjoyed people go downtown for an all-night gala.

Incredible firework displays are also held in Prague, Paris, Austin and Bangkok. Lucky New Year’s Eve revelers who are at Niagara Falls will be awarded with a remarkable fireworks show that light up the falls. After the show a party is held with musicians, champagne and food.

New Year’s Eve is a holiday celebrated throughout the world and picking a city to commemorate the big day in will be challenge worth taking.
